Problem – Problema
While it is arguable whether one needs hot water for showering or other means, people indisputably utilize energy intensive measures to heat water, or wish they had a feasible way of doing so. In Guatemala, due to a lack of financial capital to purchase natural gas water heaters, many families either use electric water heaters, or do not have hot water at all. Not only do the electric water heaters function poorly, but they also use 4500 watts, which is a significant amount of energy. A solution that curtails the economic cost and the environmental impact of obtaining hot water will provide Guatemalans with a higher quality of life.

Before designing the system, it was decided that an inexpensive, easy to construct water heater was vital to a successful project. Furthermore, the materials used in the system needed to be obtainable anywhere in Guatemala. After creating these parameters, sustainable energy sources were analyzed to find which would be the most consistent, effective, and reliable.

It was found that in every home in San Pablo, a wood burning stove with a chimney output through the roof is used consistently throughout the day. In some cases, more wood is burned in the stove to heat water for showering or other purposes. The heat produced by the stoves is substantial. Table 1 displays temperatures recorded surrounding the chimney pipe:

Given the results of the matrix, threaded steel was chosen as the best material. Its high rate of use throughout the village for plumbing purposes affirms the material’s accessibility, and the feasibility of installation within the village.

The first prototype constructed utilized copper due to its high thermal conductivity. However, during the assembly process, the copper tubing proved to be difficult to bend into the desired shape. When inserted into the chimney, the tube kinked in several locations. The inability to easily construct the copper, and the rapidity at which it broke gave copper lower durability and constructability scores.

While threaded steel scored lower than copper in thermal conductivity in the decision matrix, table 4 calculations show that steel provides enough conduction power for the application:

It was found that the bottleneck of heat transfer was in the convection of the hot smoke onto the pipe surface rather than the conduction through the pipe wall. Thus, the greater surface area of the steel pipe has a larger potential to capture heat from hot smoke.

Prototype 1 – Prototipo 1

A soft copper 3/8″ tube was bent into a serpentine shape for the first prototype. The serpentine was lowered into the chimney, and 1 liter of water was siphoned through the copper. There was a four degree Celsius increase in temperature recorded, in a time frame of ten seconds. Although the system was difficult to construct, it was affirmed that the energy output of the chimney is sufficient to power a water heating mechanism.

Figure 1 – Figura 1

Prototype 2 – Prototipo 2

The first system prototype included a water tank, a steel tubing heat exchanger, PVC couplings, and garden hoses as connections. Because holes could not be drilled into the side of the tank, the garden hoses were routed over the lip of the tank, and dropped into the water. A high point was created in the thermosiphon, where hot water collected. This significantly reduced flow and as a result, water boiled in the heat exchanger. Water vapor also collected in the high point, further reducing flow until the siphon stopped completely. Figures 2 and 3 below illustrate this problem.

Thermosiphon_High_Point.jpg

Figure 2 –Figura 3

Prototype_2_Tank.JPG

Figure 3 – Figura 3
Several more characteristics of the system, other than the inability to pass the tubes through the tank wall, contributed to this issue. Unnecessary isolation valves, turns in the tubing, small inner diameters, and a small inclination from the chimney to the tank inhibited flow.

Furthermore, the lack of heat resistant materials became an issue when the thermosiphon reversed unexpectedly. The system was constructed with a cold input built with low temperature resistant material, which failed under the high temperatures of the reversed siphon. A data logger recorded temperature for 19 hours. The reverse of the siphon can be viewed in Figure 4 below at 10:00AM when the Cold In temperature exceeds the Hot Out.

Thus, given these problems, it was clear that a new improved system needed to be developed.

Prototype 3 – Prototipo 3

Figure 6 illustrates the total system plan that was developed in response to the shortcomings of prototypes 1 and 2. It consists of three main components: a heat exchanger located inside the chimney (1), a tank positioned higher in altitude than the heat exchanger (2), and clean lines of tubing connecting the two together (3).

prototype_3_Tank.JPG

Figure 8 – Figura 8

A new tank that can be drilled into was purchased. PVC couplings with gaskets were placed on the tank, so that the water can pass through the wall of the tank. This feature eliminates the issue of a high point in the thermosiphon. The tank was also placed at a higher level, so that a greater inclination was achieved.

Radiator tubing was utilized to connect the heat exchanger to the tank for its heat resistance, insulative properties, and durability. When placed under high temperatures, the tubing did not warp.

Results – Resultos
The figure 9 data sets were recorded using thermocouples. Temperature was recorded every five minutes of the upper water level of the tank, surface temperature of the cold entry on the heat exchanger, surface temperature of the hot exit of the heat exchanger, and ambient temperature. Note that no hot water was used, and no cold water was added during the recording session.

Discussion was held regarding the future of the project and the technology. Two approaches were discussed. A small business of installing and maintaining heaters could be created, or a user could install the system in his or her home using provided information. Regardless of the approach, a detailed manual in Spanish is necessary for installment, comprehension of the physics involved, and awareness of costs associated with the system. The manual may be downloaded and viewed in the Appendix at the bottom of the page.

Upon leaving, the system was disassembled in its test location, and given to a San Pabloan student, Roman Velasquez Ramirez. Roman will install the system solely utilizing the help of the manual, and fellow San Pabloans. Long term qualitative will be recorded for future Guateca groups to analyze.

On a more technical level, the following are potential tasks to be completed:

  • Experimentation with tank insulation
  • Experimentation with other heat exchanger designs
  • Experimentation with high temperature PVC and other tubing
  • Determining the effectiveness of the manual
  • Finding ways to reduce costs
  • Updating the manual with found improvements

Conclusion – Conclusion
After two months of research, testing, constructing, and cross cultural collaboration, the following was completed:

  • A functioning system was built for under $150
  • Different materials were explored
  • A thorough analysis of the performance of the system
  • Economic and CO2 life cycle analyses
  • Creation of a user manual

Although the process was difficult, and numerous cultural and technical road blocks were encountered, our original goal was met. The system performs better than current electronic shower heads, and costs less in economic and environmental terms. While there is much more to be investigated, this technology has the potential to improve a Guatemalan’s quality of life.
